About the Event

Biram is one of the most successful and renown anti-slavery activists.

He is the founder and president of the Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolition Movement (IRA) in Mauritania. For his work he has received a number of awards such as the Human Rights Tulip in 2015, the 2013 United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights and he has been featured by Time Magazine in their Top 100. Biram will be speaking about the issues Mauritania deals with and the work he does to try to prevent this.

Mauritania is controlled by an Arab-Berber elite while the majority of the population are Afro-Africans, ethnic groups such as Bambara, Wolof and Fulani. The largest of these groups are the Haratin, a caste of slaves who are still treated as such. Despite repeated warnings by the United Nations, investigations by international organizations regarding this matter have been frustrated by the government of Mauritania.

Music: Yero Gaynaako

The evening will feature music by Yero Gaynaako. Yero is a rapper from Mauritania who raps about political and social issues such as discrimination of the black population and slavery. He has helped to organize the Welooti-Festival, a festival including lectures about social issues and music in the Fulani-language, a minority language spoken by the black population in Southern-Mauritania. During the summer of 2017 he was a guest of Shelter City Amsterdam and because of continuing threats he has received asylum in the Netherlands. He will be performing together with street performer gHSTS & gUITARS.
